When AM Racing benched their driver Austin Wayne Self for the last two races in favor of Bubba Wallace it was believed they were doing so to improve their equipment going forward.

Turns out they may have been dealing with the aftermath of a failed drug test, as Austin Wayne Self was officially listed on this week’s penalty report as suspended due to the Substance Abuse Policy.

Self, 23, is indefinitely suspended from NASCAR and will be subject to the Road to Recovery program before he is able to return to driving competitively.

The AM Racing team released the following statement regarding the suspension:

“AM Racing respects NASCAR’s decision and will follow their direction. We expect Austin Wayne Self to return to the seat as quickly as possible. AM Racing will continue to operate as normal with a determination of a driver lineup set in the coming weeks.”

The driver from Austin, TX has made 66 starts in his career in the NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series, and has recorded five top-10 finishes. Self’s best career finish was a runner-up effort in the season-opening event at Daytona International Speedway in 2017.
