The rumors had been circling that 2019 could perhaps be Darrell Waltrip’s final season in the booth for Fox Sports. The intensity of those rumors were swirling harder this week than the winds that fly off of cars to create a vortex that keeps weather away (a DW theory).

According to an exclusive chat with Waltrip, the Tennessean says that Waltrip, 72, has let it be known that he will drop the microphone and hang up his headphones after the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series event at Sonoma in June.

On the track, Waltrip was a three-time Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series champion who won 84 races in a legendary career that spanned 26 full-time seasons.

After retiring following the 2000 season, Waltrip transitioned into the commentating booth. He ushered in an era that saw NASCAR hit it’s highest peak in television viewership. He will be remembered for his strong opinions and humor and stability in tough situations, such as the passing of Dale Earnhardt in 2001.
