Race Preview

Denny Hamlin, the winner at Homestead-Miami Speedway a season ago, will roll from the pole in Sunday’s Dixie Vodka 400, the third race of the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series season. Hamlin enters the race at the point leader and he’s looking for his first win of the year.

The driver of the No. 11 car not only won this race a season ago, he dominated it by leading 137 of the 267 laps.

Despite a chaotic couple of weeks at Daytona, Hamlin was able to emerge from the superspeedway edition (Daytona 500) and last week’s road course version unscathed with back-to-back top-five finishes. He should certainly factor into the battle for the win this weekend.

Joey Logano, who has held the lead in the closing laps in each of the first two events of 2021, only to be passed within the final two laps both times, will start from second. Logano will be hungry for a win and he’s been decent over the years at the 1.5-mile speedway near Miami.

Before finishing a disappointing 27th last season, after leading 27 laps in the event, Logano had recorded five finishes of sixth-or-better at this track, including his win in the 2018 season-finale, which secured his NASCAR Cup Series championship.

Christopher Bell, last week’s winner, will start from third and he’s a compelling driver to keep an eye on. He started 36th and finished eighth in this race a year ago. This time around, he’ll have the momentum of his first career win, and he’ll start 33 spots higher in the starting lineup. Bell could be a contender for a second win in a row this weekend.

Chase Elliott and Ryan Blaney, who finished second and third in this race last year, will attempt to get their first win of the season on Sunday, but they’ll have to come from a little further back.

Elliott starts 11th after what seemed like a for sure win, vanished last weekend after a late weather caution changed things at the Daytona Road Course. Blaney meanwhile, has been super quiet in 2021, and will look to finally make some noise in race three from the 14th starting spot.
