NASCAR and the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The match we never expected to happen before 2021, is now a reality for the 2022 season.

For the first-time ever, NASCAR’s pre-season exhibition event will take place outside of Daytona Beach, Florida. The marquee non-points race will be moving to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles, California.

The news was first reported by The Athletic, ahead of the official announcement.

NASCAR will construct a temporary quarter-mile asphalt track for the February 6 event. And the race will take place one week before the Super Bowl. That puts the event two weeks prior to the 64th-annual Daytona 500.

The event will utilize the series’ brand-new Next Gen car. Teams have been testing the Next Gen in preparation for its full-time use in 2022.

The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum was opened in 1923.

This iconic stadium is home to the USC Trojan football team, has hosted the Summer Olympics, NFL, MLB and other events over the years.

NASCAR will head to the Coliseum, now.

How Will the Racing be at the Coliseum?

On NASCAR Race Hub, Clint Bowyer, Jamie McMurray and Tyler Reddick gave an example of the racing expected at the Coliseum through an iRacing simulation. To put it mildly, the action in the few minutes of sim racing on FS1 was wild.

Other details, such as car count, format, and eligibility, have not been determined and will be announced at a later date.

Kyle Busch won the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series Busch Clash at the Daytona International Speedway Road Course. Whatever drivers compete in the 2022 edition, it’ll be a totally different beast.
