Rick Ware Racing is looking to sell its NASCAR Cup Series organization to TJ Puchyr for $150 million, but the team encountered an obstacle in the sale on Thursday as a North Carolina judge granted a 10-day temporary restraining order to LEGACY MOTOR CLUB.
LEGACY MOTOR CLUB must post a $5 million bond, and a preliminary injunction will be forthcoming.
This is the latest chapter in a battle between the two race teams, following a Charter sale deal that went awry, leading to a lawsuit being filed against Rick Ware Racing by LEGACY MOTOR CLUB in April. LEGACY MOTOR CLUB alleged that Rick Ware Racing attempted to pull out of a Charter Sale Agreement, which had been signed and finalized by all parties involved.
In June, Rick Ware Racing issued a countersuit against LEGACY MOTOR CLUB, alleging that LEGACY MOTOR CLUB was seeking the wrong Charter in its initial lawsuit, and that the initial sales contract between the two teams was littered with errors, which had to be re-worked.
Rick Ware Racing, which has a two-year Charter Lease agreement with RFK Racing, claimed that selling the incorrect Charter to LEGACY MOTOR CLUB would force Rick Ware Racing to close its racing team. In its countersuit, Rick Ware Racing was seeking LEGACY MOTOR CLUB’s initial lawsuit to be voided as RWR claims there was no “meeting of the minds” during the contract dispute.
On June 26, it was reported by the Associated Press that Rick Ware Racing had entered into an agreement to sell its NASCAR Cup Series team to TJ Puchyr, a former co-owner of Spire Motorsports.
It’ll be interesting to see how this disagreement between LEGACY MOTOR CLUB and Rick Ware Racing continues to unfold, especially considering the outcome potentially impacts the RFK Racing team and its ability to hold three team Charters for the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series season.
