LASTCAR: JJ Yeley and Greg Rayl End Weekend on Bottom of the Leaderboard

Brock Beard at LASTCAR.info does something unique — at least in the world of motorsports journalism. He recaps the last place finisher of each week’s NASCAR Cup Series, Xfinity Series and Truck Series race. The recaps are thorough and packed full of stats, and Beard was actually on hand at Sonoma Raceway which gives this week’s Cup Series recap a little extra juice.

According to Beard, JJ Yeley — who finished the day last in the Toyota Save Mart 350 at Sonoma — had not finished last in four years. That all changed on Sunday when a faulty fuel pump knocked his No. 51 car out of the race after 53 laps.

The most interesting nugget about the Yeley review in my opinion, is that Beard spoke to Yeley about NY Racing. That was the team that Yeley was supposed to moonlight for in the Cup Series in 2019, but to this point they have yet to show up to a track with their No. 7 car.

“Nothing new for New York Racing right now,” Yeley said to Beard. “It’s been more of a matter of sitting around waiting for sponsorship to develop. We got to a situation where it was some opportunities to fill in with Rick (Ware) and we actually talked last year about doing something, so we got a couple more races planned, should be at Chicagoland next week, then Daytona after that.”

In Saturday night’s NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series event at Gateway, Greg Rayl had high hopes of making a good impression in his series debut. Unfortunately, while Ross Chastain was celebrating his second-career victory Rayl was more than likely already a god portion of the way back home.

Rayl crashed his No. 0 truck on lap two, which ended his day before it really even began.

It was a tough break for the 55-year old who was given an opportunity to show what he could do in the Truck Series.
