LEGACY MOTOR CLUB is set to make some significant changes to its third, part-time entry in the NASCAR Cup Series, TobyChristie.com has learned.
Veteran NASCAR crew chief Jason Burdett, who last December was tapped to work with seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson as crew chief of the No. 84 Toyota Camry XSE, is no longer with the organization, a team representative confirmed.
Before jumping to LEGACY MC, Burdett spent nine seasons as a crew chief in the NASCAR Xfinity Series for JR Motorsports, collecting 18 victories working with drivers Regan Smith, Justin Allgaier, and Brandon Jones.
The departure of Burdett, coupled with some other personnel changes on the No. 84 Toyota Camry XSE will not impact the entry’s status, as Johnson will still return to the NASCAR Cup Series for events this Fall at Kansas, Las Vegas, and Phoenix.
An announcement including the entry’s new crew chief will be made in due course.
It’s been a difficult six-race campaign for Johnson and LEGACY MOTOR CLUB this season, scoring a best finish of 28th at Dover. The struggle comes as Johnson’s acclimation to the seventh-generation vehicle intersects with the team’s acclimation to its new manufacturer, Toyota.
The organization also fields a pair of full-time entries in the NASCAR Cup Series for John Hunter Nemechek (No. 42) and Erik Jones (No. 43), who have also had their fair share of struggles with the manufacturer switch, currently sitting 27th and 31st in points.
