Rookie David Malukas suffered a crash in final practice for the 106th Running of Indianapolis 500.

The 20-year-old from Chicago, Illinois was making a pass to the inside of the No. 23 Dreyer & Reinbold Chevrolet of Santino Ferrucci entering Turn 1 roughly halfway through the session when the two made wheel-to-wheel contact. As a result, it put Malukas’ No. 18 Dale Coyne Racing with HMD Motorsports Honda into a half-spin and into the outside wall in the shortchute just after the exit of Turn 1.

Over the radio, Malukas was heard asking, “What happened?” To which his crew responded, “You guys touched, I think it cut your tire.”

IndyCar officials deemed it as avoidable contact and penalized Ferrucci by parking him for the final 20 minutes of the session.
