Dalton Kellett became the first driver to suffer a crash during the month of May festivities for the 106th Running of the Indianapolis 500.

With just over 30 minutes left during Monday’s two-hour post-qualifying practice, the 28-year-old Canadian was running alongside the No. 28 Andretti Autosport Honda of Romain Grosjean as the pair approached Turn 1. With not enough momentum to pull an outside pass, Kellett chose to ease out of the throttle to follow behind.

However, Kellett’s No. 4 AJ Foyt Racing Chevrolet was already high up in the groove and the backend snapped around and he slammed the outside wall at driver’s left, with the momentum causing him to briefly catch air before settling down and coming to a stop.

Fortunately, Kellett was able to exit the car under his own power, and later cleared and released from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway medical center.
