Alexander Rossi was fastest in the only practice session for this weekend’s Gallagher Grand Prix at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The 30-year-old Californian wheeled the No. 27 Andretti Autosport Honda to flying lap of 1m10.0919s (125.270 mph) around the 14-turn, 2.439-mile road course.

Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden, who was provisionally cleared for the session following last weekend’s fall and overnight stay in a hospital in Iowa, ended up showing no signs of slowing down and ended 0.0202s behind the top spot.

Colton Herta, who won the first race – GMR Grand Prix – on the IMS road course back in May, put his No. 26 Andretti Autosport Honda in third.

Team Penske’s Scott McLaughlin was fourth, while reigning NTT IndyCar Series champion Alex Palou put his No. 10 Chip Ganassi Racing Honda in fifth.

Graham Rahal and Felix Rosenqvist ended up sixth and seventh, respectively. Rookie Christian Lundgaard was eighth, followed by Helio Castroneves and Conor Daly.

There were no incidents that impeded the session.
