Ryan Preece has been transported to a local area hospital – where he is awake and alert – after a nasty tumble down the backstretch at Daytona, where his No. 41 RaceChoice.com Ford Mustang took flight, after being sent to the infield by Erik Jones and hitting teammate Chase Briscoe.

Note: As of the time of publishing this story, Ryan Preece has been transported to a local area hospital, where he will undergo additional testing. According to several different accounts, Preece is awake and alert.

UPDATE (2:20 AM ET): Stewart-Haas Racing says Ryan Preece is awake, alert, and mobile, but will remain overnight at Halifax Health Medical Center for continued observation. He will undergo further observation by medical personnel later this morning. An update will be provided in the afternoon.

UPDATE #2 (10:52 AM ET): Stewart-Haas Racing says that Ryan Preece was discharged from Halifax Health Medical Center earlier this morning, after his brutal crash late in Saturday’s NASCAR Cup Series event at Daytona. Preece is currently on his way home to North Carolina.

There aren’t many people who can say they’ve taken a ride down the backstretch at Daytona International Speedway in the same manner as Ryan Preece, following Saturday’s Coke Zero Sugar 400.

Preece, driving the No. 41 RaceChoice.com Ford Mustang, was running in the middle of the lead draft when contact from Erik Jones punted the Stewart-Haas Racing driver to the left, where he hit teammate Chase Briscoe.

That contact would then send Preece spinning into the infield, where the air got underneath his vehicle, sending him airborne, before landing on his roof and flipping several times down the backstretch.

Preece would tumble at least 10 times down the backstretch, as the car continued to dissipate energy with every impact to the ground. However, the Berlin, Connecticut native got high in the air before the wreck was completely over.

The 32-year-old driver was able to get out of his car with the help of the AMR Safety team but would be loaded on a stretcher and brought to the infield care center – where it would later be decided a transfer to a local hospital would be necessary.
