Jacob Abel will return to the Indy Lights series in 2023 with his family’s team, Abel Motorsports.

The Kentucky native finished eighth in the 2022 Indy Lights championship standings with five top-five finishes. Three of those finishes were in the final three races of the season at Portland International Raceway and WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.

Abel will race the No. 51 IL-15 entry. The team plans to expand to multiple cars for 2023.

“I’m really excited to be back with the team in 2023,” Abel said in a team release. “We were able to build a strong foundation, and the difference between us at the first race of the season in St. Pete and now is amazing. There were definitely some results that slipped away from us for one reason or another, but we knew this was going to be a building year for both the team and me personally.”

The 21-year-old finished in the top-10 in every Indy Lights race in 2022 except for both races in Detroit after retiring with early wall contact. This announcement brings the Indy Lights field to 13 drivers for the 2023 season.
