HMD Motorsports have announced that Josh Pierson will compete for them in a partial Indy Lights campaign in 2023.

The 16-year-old will compete in a car entered by HMD Motorsports in conjunction with Dale Coyne Racing when his racing schedule allows. Pierson’s primary driving role is competing in the FIA World Endurance Championship for United Autosports, racing an LMP2 machine.

“I am excited to start the next chapter of my motorsports career,” said Pierson in a team release. “While I will continue on with United Autosport in WEC, I could not pass up the opportunity to join HMD Motorsports and further my open-wheel racing career in North America.”

Pierson signed a multi-year deal to remain with the organization after the 2023 racing season.

If the 2023 Indy Lights schedule remains the same as 2022, then Pierson would miss the races at Barber Motorsports Park in April and at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in September. No replacement has been announced for those races nor has a car number been specified.

Pierson has previous open wheel experience in the U.S. as he raced in USF2000 in 2020 and 2021. While not winning a race, Pierson did have seven top-five finishes in 18 starts to finish fourth in the 2021 USF2000 points.

Pierson completes the eight-car Indy Lights armada that HMD Motorsports will enter in 2023. The team has announced Christian Bogle, Josh Green, Danial Frost, Nolan Siegel, Christian Rasmussen, Kyffin Simpson and Rasmus Lindh before completing their lineup.
