For the first time since 1998, the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series visits the 1.99-mile road course of Sonoma Raceway for Saturday’s Door Dash 250.
With the series having not visited the California road course for an extended period of time, series officials provided drivers and teams with an extended practice session, 50 minutes in length, prior to Saturday’s qualifying and race events.
Christian Eckes – who looks to continue a streak of top-five results in the series — was the fastest in Friday’s untelevised practice, posting a time of 81.040 seconds (88.401mph), the quickest lap of the 35 trucks that took time.
Alex Bowman – making his second NCWTS start of 2022 — clocked in second-quickest, over a tenth of a second behind the session’s leader, Eckes.
Ross Chastain, Matt DiBenedetto, Parker Kligerman, and Chandler Smith all posted times inside the top-six in the session.
With Daniel Suarez behind the wheel, the No. 42 Niece Motorsports Chevrolet Silverado posted the seventh-quickest time in the session, clocking in a half-second behind the fastest time.
Carson Hocevar, recovering from a broken right tibia from a last-lap accident at WWT Raceway, was allowed to make laps in the session, after showing NASCAR he could get in and out of the truck, to the sanctioning body’s satisfaction.
At the time of publishing, no decision has been made on if the Portage, Michigan-native will be allowed to compete in Saturday’s Door Dash 250.
Zane Smith, John Hunter Nemechek, and Derek Kraus rounded out the top-10 in the session.
Zane Smith, John Hunter Nemechek, and Derek Kraus rounded out the top-10 in the session, with notable drivers like Kyle Busch (13th), Harrison Burton (27th), Austin Dillon (31st), and Jade Buford (33rd) posting results outside the top-10.
Colin Garrett (No. 30 On Point Motorsports) and Travis McCullough (No. 47 G2G Racing) failed to make laps in Friday’s 50-minute session.
Garrett, who is scheduled to make his NASCAR National Series debut in Saturday’s event, says he wasn’t allowed to make practice laps, due to NASCAR not having the results from his drug test back.
Well that was cool. 0 laps in practice because we’ve yet to hear back from NASCAR on my drug test… so that’s my luck. Here’s to hoping they decide to get to it this week by tomorrow 🎉
