Mayer, Allmendinger Talladega Crash. Screengrab from NBCSN race broadcast.

Well, it’ll be an early exit to the day for one of the 2021 NASCAR Xfinity Series championship favorites AJ Allmendinger and JR Motorsports’ Sam Mayer. The two drivers were in the middle of a four-wide battle with Brett Moffit and Brandon Brown as they were heading to the conclusion of the first Stage of the Sparks 300.

Then, Mayer received contact from Brown, which sent him down into Moffitt. The contact with Moffitt shot Mayer back up across the track and into Allmendinger and the wall. And the contact was VERY hard.

Here is video of the crash:

The crash was so severe that track officials had to make repairs to the SAFER barrier in the turn following the impact.
