Ty Gibbs Carries Damaged Vehicle to Seventh ARCA Menards Series Victory of 2021 at Winchester

Saturday Night’s Calypso Lemonade 200 at Winchester Speedway was an intense one, which featured lots of hard racing throughout the entirety of the 200-lap event, but in the end it was Ty Gibbs launching his No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota Camry into victory lane for his seventh ARCA Menards Series victory of the season.

However, unlike a number of his previous wins this year, the triumph wasn’t captured easily for the 18-year-old, who had to rebound from significant contact with Brandon Varney’s No. 10 in the early stages of the event, causing noticeable damage to Gibbs’ entry. After restarting at the back of the lead lap, Gibbs was able to methodically work his way through traffic into the runner-up position, where he hounded Corey Heim for the majority of the race’s final run.

With under five laps to go, and with the help of lapped car Thad Moffitt, Gibbs was able to ruffle the feathers of the Venturini Motorsports driver, but may have ruffled them a little bit too much, as Heim’s No. 20 Toyota Camry spun around in turn two, drawing the final caution flag of the evening. From there, it was smooth sailing for Gibbs, who pulled to a sizeable margin on the green-white-checkered restart to capture victory at Winchester Speedway.

Greg Van Alst finished a career-best second, with Corey Heim, Thad Moffitt and Taylor Gray rounding out the top-five finishers. Brandon Varney, Parker Chase, Kris Wright, Toni Breidinger and Tony Cosentino rounded out the top-10, with Zachary Tinkle’s No. 06 being the last car running at the end of the race in 11th.

Finishing 13th and 14th were Daniel Dye and Nick Sancehz, who were involved in a vicious accident on Lap 84, where Taylor Gray – driving the No. 17 for David Gilliland Racing — hooked the right rear of Daniel Dye’s No. 21 GMS Racing Chevrolet, sending the Berlin winner into the outside wall. Dye’s vehicle slid down the race track, clobbering the No. 2 of Nick Sanchez.
