The NASCAR Xfinity Series will have the weekend off before heading to Darlington for NASCAR’s Throwback Weekend.

However, one Xfinity Series driver will mark the off-weekend with a major milestone for their career.

Team BJ McLeod has confirmed that driver Matt Mills will make his NASCAR Cup Series debut for BJ McLeod Motorsports at Kansas this weekend for the Buschy McBusch Race 400.

It’ll be an electrifying ride for the 24-year-old, with Siebert Electric joining the effort, as well as long-time partner J.F. Electric, and Little Joe’s Auto. Siebert Electric is a veteran owned and operated company specialized in electrical distribution and vegetation management also providing expert construction services on-demand for utility-based customers.

“We are excited about partnering with Matt Mills and his Racing team,” said Ryan Siebert of Siebert Electric. “As a son of a Marine, Matt and his team align with the Siebert Electric team’s core values of hard work, determination, superb quality, and family values.”

The Cup debut is a special one for Mills and owner McLeod, who have enjoyed a long-time relationship driver to driver, and now driver to owner.

“There aren’t words to explain what Sunday will mean to my family and I,” said Mills. “There was a time not that long ago that we struggled to get to our local short track. Racing in the NASCAR Cup Series has been a lifelong dream thanks to BJ, Jessica (McLeod), and J.F. Electric for all they have done for me and continue to do for me, as well as Thompson Electric. With the addition of Siebert Electric & Little Joe’s Auto, I’m achieving that dream. My goal for Sunday is to be smart, learn, earn respect, and complete the entire race. I can’t wait to get to the track!”

McLeod will still pilot his traditional No. 78 this weekend for Live Fast. Mills’ No. 55 ride is being raced under the “BJ McLeod Motorsports” banner.

Mills is in the midst of a full-time schedule for McLeod’s Xfinity operation, piloting the No. 5 entry. He’s driven a Team B.J. McLeod entry in every year of Xfinity dating back to 2017. His career takes the next major step on Sunday.

“We’re thrilled to have Matt make his NCS debut,” said team owner BJ McLeod. “We wanted to get him a (NASCAR) Cup debut with as much experience as possible. With all of the NXS racing he and his partners (J.F. Electric, Utilitra) have done, it’s time to get him a Cup start.  You only get one first start and to have him do it for us is pretty cool for Jessica and I and its something we wanted to see happen.”

Mills will join McLeod, Scott Heckert, and Shane Golobic as drivers who made a start for Live Fast in 2021. McLeod delivered the team’s best finish so far this season at the season opener at Daytona with a 23rd place finish.

Fans can see Mills make his NASCAR Cup Series debut at Kansas Speedway on Sunday, May 2nd at 3:00 PM EST on FOX Sports 1 and the FOX Sports App.
