Race Preview

Three races in, three different winners so far in the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series season. Can we see a fourth winner Sunday in the Pennzoil 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway? Most likely, as the dominant names in the sport still haven’t found victory lane yet.

Kevin Harvick will start from the pole on Sunday, by way of NASCAR’s performance metric. Harvick has two wins at LVMS, both of which have come since 2015. Harvick is also one of just two drivers (Michael McDowell being the other) that have finished inside the top-10 in all three NCS events in 2021.

If Harvick and Rodney Childers unload a fast No. 4 car, it could be trouble for the rest of the field in Sin City.

Another usually dominant name starting near the front is Martin Truex Jr., who will roll from fourth on the starting grid. Truex, who had a sluggish start through the first two races of 2021, came on strong a week ago at Homestead.

He finished third in both Stages 1 and 2 and then finished third in the race. Truex was gaining a bit of his swagger throughout that 400-mile event, expect him to be good again on Sunday.

Kyle Larson has had a great start to the 2021 season. He finished top-10 in the season-opening Daytona 500, was in contention for a win at the Daytona Road Course before stuffing his car into the tire barrier while running second late in the event, and then this past weekend, he was in the thick of the battle for the win.

Larson, who looked like his career was on life support last season, now appears to be off to a quick start with Hendrick Motorsports in the No. 5 car.

Other drivers inside the top-10 starting spots to keep an eye on include Kurt Busch (seventh), who won at LVMS last fall, and Brad Keselowski (10th), who has three career wins at the 1.5-mile speedway (most of any active drivers).

Also, William Byron, who won a week ago, will look to win for a second-consecutive weekend. Last week’s win also came on a 1.5-mile speedway, so the No. 24 team should have a little spring in their step this weekend as Byron will start from second-place.
