Race Preview

No driver in the NASCAR Xfinity Series is on a hot of a streak as Austin Cindric. The 2020 series champion scored the victory in last week’s season-opening event at Daytona on the superspeedway layout. Now, he returns to Daytona on the 3.61-mile road course layout — where he won last season — and he’ll attempt to defend his race win from the second starting position (determined by NASCAR’s performance metric formula).

Starting on pole for Saturday’s race will be Brett Moffitt in the No. 02 Our Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro. Moffitt, the 2018 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series champion, has never scored a NASCAR Xfinity Series win in 33 previous starts, however last week, he scored a career-best finish of second. Moffitt scored a runner-up finish at the Daytona Road Course race in the truck series a season ago.

AJ Allmendinger, who starts sixth, is expected to be one of Cindric’s toughest competitors for the victory. Allmendinger, who drives the No. 16 machine for Kaulig Racing, finished fourth in the NASCAR Xfinity Series race at the Daytona Road Course last season. Overall, four of Allmendinger’s five-career NXS wins have come at road courses, including last season at the Charlotte Roval.

Brandon Jones and Noah Gragson, who were swept up in crashes last week at Daytona, finished second and third respectively on the Daytona Road Course last season. They could replicate those results this time around, but they’ll have to do so from deep in the field. Gragson will start 26th, while Jones will start next to last in 39th.
