NASCAR Officially Bans Use of Confederate Flag at All Events and Properties

It seemed like a no brainer, but NASCAR finally made it official on Wednesday: the sanctioning body has banned the use of the confederate flag at all events and on all NASCAR properties effective immediately.

NASCAR made the announcement via a statement on Wednesday.

The statement from NASCAR reads:

NASCAR STATEMENT

“The presence of the confederate flag at NASCAR events runs contrary to our commitment to providing a welcoming and inclusive environment for all fans, our competitors and our industry. Bringing people together around a love for racing and the community that it creates is what makes our fans and sport special. The display of the confederate flag will be prohibited from all NASCAR events and properties.”

This comes on the heels of a very big week for NASCAR from an inclusion standpoint.

Before Sunday’s race at Atlanta, NASCAR took a moment of silence for racial equality in the wake of the death of George Floyd, which has sparked protests and rioting across all 50 states.

Then, on Tuesday, NASCAR announced a new initiative benefitting the LBGTQ community in the form of an upcoming auction.
