NASCAR’s Steve O’Donnell Responds to Kyle Busch’s Criticism of Racing Package

Following Monday’s Gander RV 400 at Dover International Speedway, Kyle Busch who gained 12 spots on the day (started 22nd and finished 10th) had pointed words about the new racing package that NASCAR is utilizing this season. Busch and others were critical because they felt it was too hard to pass (Martin Truex Jr. and Alex Bowman who finished 1-2 started at the rear of the field on Monday for what it’s worth).

Tuesday morning on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio’s Morning Drive, NASCAR’s Executive Vice President and Chief Racing Development Officer Steve O’Donnell addressed Busch’s harsh comments.

“What’s unfortunate is he actually tied a record yesterday and the question I’m asked is about his comments post-race,” said O’Donnell.

O’Donnell then continued by saying that at the top level of racing passing should be difficult.

“His teammate was able to win and pass every car in the field, but he chose to make the comments he did. If you look at the package no matter what we’ve put out there. Drivers always say it’s hard to pass. Our comment back to that has always been these are the best drivers in the world, it’s going to be hard to pass them.”

Busch was not alone in questioning the aerodynamic package that has been in use this season. Kevin Harvick and Leavine Family Racing’s car owner Bob Leavine were also critical on Monday.

  1. An aerodynamic package that causes this type of crap doesn’t show how great the racers are. It creates situations that do the opposite – you’re hindered by the package and your skill is nullified.
