Spire Motorsports got their team off to a solid start in the Daytona 500 as they fielded the No. 40 car for what is likely Jamie McMurray’s final Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series start. Now, the team will have a young driver looking for a chance to prove himself behind the wheel in Atlanta.
Garrett Smithley of Peachtree City, GA will warm the seat for Quin Houff who will drive the No. 77 for roughly half of the season.
Smithley will be making his fourth career start in NASCAR’s Premier division, his best Cup Series finish to date was a 32nd-place effort at Michigan last August.
No word on a sponsor, but Smithley did have Victory Lane Quick Oil Change as his sponsor in all three of his Cup Series starts a season ago.
Smithley ran two races for StarCom Racing in the No. 99 ride and one race for Premium Motorsports’ No. 7 car.
The young race team, which purchased their charter from the now shuttered Furniture Row Racing, had their car lead some laps in Daytona. Now they will look to continue to build their program in Atlanta.
