Friday, on ABC’s Good Morning America the world finally got a chance to see Jimmie Johnson’s 2019 Ally Financial race car for the first time. And to be honest, it’s an interesting paint scheme.

The car incorporates black as the base color, but it features a harsh gradient from dark purple to pink around the front wheel area and the rear quarter panel. The hood is interesting as well as it looks like the Ally Financial logo has been copied and pasted several times in different colors.

Also, the scheme incorporates the two L’s in Ally’s logo to form racing stripes down the middle of the car. The car does continue to feature the iconic neon yellow 48 that has become synonymous with Johnson throughout his career.

Johnson said he put in a lot of effort himself to come up with the paint job.

“This is an exciting beginning with Ally, and we wanted a car that conveyed that excitement to our fans,” Johnson said this morning after unveiling the new car on Good Morning America. “Personally, I’ve put a ton of time in on this paint scheme to help our team develop the new look.”

Johnson and Hendrick Motorsports have a deal with Ally Financial that goes through the end of the 2020 season. Johnson’s new sponsor believes the driver aligns perfectly with what they are trying to achieve.

“We wanted Jimmie and fans throughout the country to love the car, so we were ecstatic that he took such a hands-on approach to developing a paint scheme that would stand out and his fans would embrace,” said Andrea Brimmer, chief marketing and PR officer for Ally. “It’s just another example of why our relationship is such a great match. His values line up with Ally’s approach. We both have high standards and want to make sure we ‘Do it Right’ for our fans and customers.”

Of course, Johnson is a seven-time Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series champion, who is seeking racing immortality. If he can capture one more title before hanging up his helmet, Johnson would be the only driver in Cup Series history with eight championships.

Through a 17 year career, Johnson has amassed 83 victories, but he went win less in 2018 for the first time in his career. The California native will look to bounce back in a big way in ’19.

Ally Racing posted a great walk around of the new scheme on Twitter.

    1. It seems to be a super polarizing paint scheme. Folks either absolutely want to see the car burned, or they love it with all their heart.
